Our approach is built on core principles that guide every project and client relationship.
Protheroughs is a client-focused practice that works proactively to find the right solution for each project. By anticipating challenges and addressing them early, we help ensure smooth project delivery and minimise the risk of costly delays.
We embrace new technologies and modelling tools to create efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective designs. We use Revit to make sure our designs are fully coordinated with other members of the design and construction team to avoid costly errors and delays on site.
You can count on us to deliver on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. Our commitment to reliability ensures consistent quality across every project.
"Excellent service from James on a recent 6-house site. He turned my initial skepticism into confidence with a well-explained foundation solution that saved us time and headache. The coordination regarding site levels was flawless, ensuring a smooth build with zero delays. They are now our go-to structural engineers for future developments."

Structural Engineering is at the start of a necessary shift to reduce the carbon impact of construction. Protheroughs is working hard to help drive that change.
Specifying low-carbon materials, such as green concrete (using supplementary cementitious materials like fly ash), responsibly sourced timber, and recycled steel.
Using tools like the IStructE Structural Carbon Tool and our own spreadsheets we are actively tracking the carbon in our projects and sharing with the wider design team to help our decision making process.
Reducing the overall quantity of materials used through optimising our frame layout.
Collaborating with architects early to create column grids that work with the intent and reduce transfer and long spans which can be materially intensive.
Prioritising the repurposing of existing structures and elements over demolition and new construction.
Engineering structures with reversible connections to allow components to be removed and reused at the end of the building's life, rather than being discarded.
As structural engineers we have a lot of knowledge where materials are being taken out from buildings and structures. Using our network we try to pass this information on to projects which may need similar materials. This process is in its infancy and we welcome early collaboration.

James Protherough started the practice to bring high-level expertise to a more personal scale. After years spent engineering complex developments of above £100, James wanted to get back to what he loves most — working closely with people to turn ambitious designs into reality.
